Commitment to Community

Building Resilience, Together.

Maine’s community needs continue to grow at unprecedented levels during the pandemic. Nonprofits across the state are stepping up to address food insecurity, housing, unemployment, medical relief, emotional support, and technical business assistance. Our own immediate Rapid Response Grant provided $100,000 to 42 Community-Focused Nonprofits, but the need continues to grow.

So we’re tripling our Commitment to Community to $300,000.

Applications open on May 1, 2020, and provide an additional $200,000 in grants to qualified nonprofits (501c3’s) in our service areas that are working directly with the COVID 19 outbreak and its physical and financial consequences here in Maine.

Our grant will advance the following priorities:
$100,000 in additional funding toward building resilience for Maine’s people.
  • We will prioritize ongoing food insecurity, services for the aging and isolated, medical response, and services for children including childcare and digital equity.
  • Nonprofits may apply for grants up to $5,000 through the below link.
  • If your nonprofit previously applied for our Rapid Response Grant and did not receive funding, your application will be reviewed in the second round automatically.
  • If your nonprofit received funding from our Rapid Response Grant, you are not eligible to reapply.

$100,000 toward building resilience for Maine’s businesses.

  • We will prioritize organizations that provide technical assistance for small businesses seeking resources during the COVID 19 pandemic
  • We will prioritize efforts that advance digital support for businesses to assist with strategic planning, creating new service models, addressing revenue building, or providing education around business financial health.
  • Recipients must be nonprofits (501c3’s) that serve the business community. We are unable to fund for profit entities through grants.
  • Nonprofits may apply for grants up to $10,000 through the below link.

All approvals will be handled through email and text so please provide accurate contact information if you are working remotely. We will also need a physical address for our tracking purposes within our markets. All funds will be delivered electronically to the nonprofit account.

$100,000 Already Committed to Maine.

Maine nonprofits, we’re proud of YOUR Commitment to Community.

Through our Rapid Response grant in March, over 100 nonprofits requested $600,000 in funding to serve Mainers facing hardship through the pandemic. We were able to award 42 nonprofits $100,000 in rapid release grants. Much of that money is already making a difference in individual lives and in communities across the State.

Check out what these organizations are doing to advance the physical and financial health of our friends and neighbors:

Commitment to Community doesn’t end here.

As the pandemic continues, so does the need for critical support. Through our branches and our main office, Machias Savings Bank remains committed to caring. Nonprofits can still apply for funds within our local markets by contacting their Branch Manager.

We are also directing the nonprofits we support to our friends at the Maine Philanthropy Center. Their Covid 19 Resources for Learning and Engagement page has direct links to many others providing new grant funding. These include the Maine Community Foundation, United Ways, Harvard Pilgrim, and many other collaborative partners that Machias Savings Bank is proud to endorse.

Our team is ready to answer your questions:
• For financial support from our new Rapid Response Grant, contact Melissa Denbow 207-271-7145, VP of Corporate Giving and Community Relations.
• For requests to our local markets, contact your Branch Manager. We are still giving to other nonprofits in addition to those working directly with the pandemic.

Backing our Commitment with People, 290 of them.

We pay our employees to volunteer in the community, up to 20 hours per employee. In response to the pandemic, we have assigned Hillary Tibbetts as our volunteer coordinator for COVID related service needs. She is backed by our Community Impact Assistants, one in every branch, to meet the volunteer needs of our communities. Practicing CDC guidelines and social distancing to ensure our safety, we will be joining others in delivering food and essential items to those who cannot leave their homes.
